EDIT: I really surprised that anybody didn't say to change that shitty hud yet. Your first work would be change it as soon as possible just because it really doesn't fit with Minecraft. Also, what are levels for?

Regarding the map creation: Why don't you add an algorithm which actually randomly creates little towns/cities? After creating the actual world you can place some prepared* houses in clusters. Interiors of houses could contain variable elements which are also randomly changed and you could even make roads between houses and place them in a grid which is defined by these roads.

I'm sure it would be fun and challenging to improve the random map generation that way

*manually create the main walls, doors, rooms etc. of the houses and save them so they can be placed on the map by the map generator. That's the simple solution. You could also do more advanced stuff and even generate the houses themselves completely with algorithms. That way you could have different sizes and room setups which are created randomly.

Hmm, Just for this it's worth improving lighting engine and adding additional binds into the game. This mod really could really bring some people into the game. Wall tiles could get darker into the distance so you don't see what some specific rock mountains contain of. I'm not sure if specific tile darkness accessibility through the script is available right now, but it could improve the look a lot.

I just made random drop from Stone blocks (just like on some Minecraft servers). Maybe I will use your idea.
